The particularity of this exhibition is the presentation of a single small-scale painting — L’Escamoteur by Hieronymus Bosch — in the immense room of the Manège Royal of Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

The disparity in size between the place and the work, the wish to confer all the greatness of the space to the painting whilst preserving the intimacy necessary for its discovery, as well as the composition of the painting — the verticality of the conjuror facing a circle of spectators — dictated the scenographic design. The details and the diversity of the spectators’ facial expressions are finely reproduced at human scale, creating a “mise en abîme” between the spectators of the painting and the ones in the painting.
