The future museum will be housed within the walls of the Vauban Citadel on Belle-Île-en-Mer, an exceptional site shaped by several centuries of history, military architecture and landscape. At the entrance to the harbour of Le Palais, its ramparts, fortifications, buildings and defensive spaces form a heritage ensemble whose many layers bear witness to the site's transformations, from the 15th century to the present day.
The exhibition design will support the Citadel's transformation into a lively, open and accessible place, while revealing the richness of its history and setting. The visitor route will provide an understanding of the site as a whole, tracing its successive transformations and highlighting its close ties with the island and its surrounding territory.
The aim is to offer an intuitive, immersive and educational visitor experience, accessible to all while preserving the historic character of the site. The interpretive elements will be integrated into the existing architecture and offer different levels of engagement, from discovery and contemplation to deeper exploration.
