Melissa Chiu, director of the Hirshhorn Museum, invited Studio Adrien Gardère to conceive and design two public installations as a counterpart of the Marvelous Objects Surrealists sculptures exhibition curated by Valerie Fletcher.

The first one — inspired by Max Ernst surrealist collages — using a wall coated with a metallic paint, invited visitors of all ages to create their own collage compositions from a set of printed magnets designed by the Studio.

The second one — inspired by American artist Man Ray’s spontaneous photographs made without a camera by placing items on light-sensitive paper and briefly exposing them to light — invited visitors of all ages to create their own rayograph from a variety of objects, placing them on a glass-topped table which would then be projected on the opposite wall.

The Surrealists called these: experiencing the marvelous.
